Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the longest railway with the highest altitude in the world, finally connected Tibet by rail when it opened to traffic on July 1, 2006.
The 1,956-km line extends from Xining, capital in Northwest China's Qinghai province in the east to Lhasa in the south.
