The railway, built in 1903 and put in use on March 31, 1910, is the only meter-gage railway in operation in China.
The 465-km line, from Kunming city to Yao autonomous county of Hekou in Southwest China's Yunnan province, is the Chinese section of the railway extending from Kunming to Hai Phong city in Vietnam.
