With a total length of 1,096 kilometers, Chengdu-Kunming Railway extends from Chengdu city in Southwest China's Sichuan province to Kunming city in Southwest China's Yunnan province.
Overcoming complex geography, the railway, open to passengers since July 1970, was praised by the United Nations as one of the three wonders of man's conquest of nature in the 20th century along with the former Soviet Union's Sputnik 1 in 1957 and the Moon rocks brought back by the US's Apollo.
