South Xinjiang Railway, opened to passengers in 1999, extends from eastern Urumqi, and crosses Tianshan Mountain to the western Kashgar Prefecture and Hotan in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
The 1,446-km line, which basically stretched along the middle line of the ancient "Silk Road", has greatly improved the traffic from the south to the north of Tianshan Mountain.
