Low-income housing needed
Comment on "Home prices continue to rise in Oct" (China Daily, Nov 18)
The price of everything is affected by demand and supply. To contain the non-stop rise in house prices in China, the government should substantially build more affordable houses for people on lower incomes. It would kill two birds with one stone: people on low incomes would be able to buy houses at prices they could afford, and the increase in the supply would help curb the non-stop surge in house prices. If this causes the property bubble to deflate, then so be it.
But the authorities should make sure that the affordable houses are of good quality, and not just a way for the developers to make a quick profit.
