BEIJING - China on Friday urged relevant countries to do more that are conducive to regional peace and stability.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks when asked to comment on a statement made by foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) on maritime disputes.

"We hope relevant countries can respect the efforts made by countries in the region to maintain the region's peace and stability, and do more that is helpful to regional peace and stability," said Hong Lei.

The G7 foreign ministers' statement voiced concern over maritime disputes and and spoke positively of the role of negotiations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) over the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea in building mutual trust.

Hong said China holds a consistent and clear stance on maritime disputes with neighboring countries.

The disputes should be solved through negotiations and consultations between immediate relevant countries, Hong said, adding China is always ready to work with countries in the region to safeguard peace and stability and promote reciprocity and cooperation.
