BEIJING - Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao met with Demetris Christofias, former president of Cyprus, on Tuesday.

Hailing the development of bilateral ties since the two forged diplomatic ties 43 years ago, Li said China is willing to cement a traditional friendship with Cyprus, further deepen political mutual trust and expand tangible cooperation in various fields.

Christofias, who was attending the International Day of Peace event held in northwest China's city of Xi'an, said Cyprus has always adhered to the one-China policy.

He spoke highly of socialism with Chinese characteristics, saying Cyprus would like to continue to push forward the development of bilateral ties between the two countries and the political parties.
