Indoor pollutants may claim at least 1 million lives every year in China, a medical expert said, according to Guangzhou Daily on Thursday.

Zhong Nanshan, an academic with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was speaking at a forum on children’s health and campus pollution in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on Dec 18.

He also said that the deaths of almost half the patients under the age of 5 who died of pneumonia were caused by the inhalation of particulate matter in indoor air pollutants.
