Hu Yumei has been looking for a doctor for her daughter since 2004 – when her daughter was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. For eight years, she has been working as a house cleaner in Beijing to pay daily expenses and for her daughter's treatment, which costs more than 30,000 yuan every year. However, the rural cooperative medical service in her hometown in Anhui province covers very little for chronic disease. And, without permanent residency in Beijing, the family's life is not easy. They have no social security and have to pay for everything on their own. Life's difficulties and the diagnosis have challenged Hu Yumei as a mother and threatened her daughter's future.
