Owls inhabit a honeycomb of burrows bored into a hillside near 54-year-old nomad Ahzhub's tent in Yege township. The isolated grasslands of Qingahi province's Qumalai county swarm with wildlife. But that means wolves often kill sheep, and bears sometimes raid dwellings' food stores. Feral mastiffs also pose dangers to humans — especially to children and particularly after dusk, when nobody uses the public latrine for fear of the predators.
