Comment on "Smog disrupts traffic in NE China" (China Daily website, Nov 24)
In North American cities, heavy smog is usually caused by thermal inversions, and it only happens once in a while. In China it's primarily caused by the overabundant use of coal for heating, electricity production, cooking, and happens on a continuous basis.
I suggest that peoples should take steps to cut air pollution. Factory owners have to make the conscious decision to lower production during times of high air quality index readings. Drivers need to change their driving habits and / or utilize mass transit. They also need to learn how to maintain their vehicles so harmful emissions will be decreased. People should not only wait for the government to make laws on it while polluting the air themselves.
