"As this method is very time-consuming and energy-costing, ordinary Tibetan residences no longer use it," Champa Tsering, director of cultural heritage bureau of Shannan, said. "However, we stick to the traditions for such a high-ranking monastery."

Rennovation of the main temple of Samye Monastery began in April, though a three-year rehabilitation of its auxiliary constructions have completed by the end of 2015.

In the 1980s, the monastery was once renovated when cement was used as material. Champa Tsering said all the cement will be removed this time and replace traditional facades with da a ga.
