China's top political adviser said on Friday prominent issues including those about history and the Diaoyu Islands have to be properly resolved to improve Sino-Japanese ties.

Yu Zhengsheng stated the position as he reaffirmed China's resolute stance over issues concerning national sovereignty and dignity during a meeting with a Japanese delegation headed by Takeshi Noda, a veteran lawmaker of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Yu, during the opening remarks, said the two countries should be "friendly neighbors", and he believes that they can overcome the current difficult situation by "efforts of both sides".

He also called for people from all walks of life in Japan to play an active role in bringing the relationship to the right track for development.

Despite concern over the current relations, Noda expressed willingness to strengthen communication with the Chinese side to repair the ties as soon as possible.

The delegation compromised of lawmakers from the ruling party arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day visit. Earlier this week, another Japanese delegation led by vice-president of the party Masahiko Komura also visited China in an attempt to repair the sour relationship.
