A member of Shanghai's political advisory body has suggested starting sex education targeted at teenagers, Shanghai Morning Post reported.

"The rates of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion among teenagers are high these years," said Wu Junqing, a member of the municipal committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, who is also a director of the research office of epidemiology and social sciences under the Shanghai Institute of Planned Parenthood Research.

Roughly 5 percent of junior high school students in Shanghai have had sex and that proportion jumps to 10 to 15 percent among senior high school students, according to Wu's research.

She will introduce her proposal to launch sex education for teenagers, students and migrant workers at the annual session of the political advisory body, which began on Saturday.

The government should formulate policy and financial support and strengthen supervision of pornographic websites, she said.
