The fourth series was introduced on April 27, 1987. The denominations were: 1 jiao, 2 jiao, 5 jiao, and 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 and 100 yuan. The 100 yuan banknote featured four of the founders of the People's Republic of China: Chairman Mao Zedong; Zhou Enlai (the first premier); Liu Shaoqi (president from 1959 to 1968); and Zhu De (a PLA general and vice-Chairman of the Communist Party, 1956-66). Lower denomination notes carried portraits of people from 14 of China's ethnic groups.
