NORTH SINAI, Egypt - One soldier was killed in an attack by a group of militants in Egypt's North Sinai on Sunday, a security source told Xinhua.

"Soldier Abdel Wahid Abdel Rahman from the Border Guards was shot dead in the head when militants attacked his checkpoint in Ghernata area in Arish, North Sinai," the source said.

Meanwhile, a firefighter was injured Sunday in another attack on the Firefighting Department in Arish, capital of North Sinai.

Early Sunday morning, a pipeline that transports natural gas to Jordan was attacked in the same governorate.

The incidents came after the Egyptian army ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday in response to millions of protesters who took to the streets and public squares across the country to demand Morsi's removal.

His supporters condemned the ouster as "a military coup" and vowed to sacrifice their lives to defend Morsi's legitimacy.

On Friday, at least five soldiers were killed in North Sinai in armed attacks by extremist Islamist groups near the Arish airport, a security camp in Rafah, a police station and two security checkpoints in Sheikh Zuwaid as well as some other security premises.

Meanwhile, clashes on Friday between Morsi's supporters and opponents killed at least 35 and injured over 1,400 across the country.
