Sidesplitting soprano

While people stereotype a classical concert as solemn and elegant, alternative Chinese coloratura soprano Wu Shuang will present a sidesplitting concert in Guangzhou on Dec 22. She will amuse the audience with humorous rewritten lyrics, comical body language, colorful costumes and surprising props. From opera selections of Puccini's None Shall Sleep to Chinese folk songs like Mayila, Wu has promised to impress the audience with her vocal skills. Wu was taught by her mother, Pingju Opera master Xin Fengxia. She also received training at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University in the US. The accompaniment by the German Radio Orchestra, a frequent performer at music festivals across Europe, will be icing on the cake for Wu's concert in Guangzhou.

8 pm, Dec 22. Opera Hall, Guangzhou Opera House, Exit B1 of Zhujiang New Town subway station, Guangzhou. 020-3839-2888.
