BEIJING  -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) will conduct a two-year trial of new procedures in family cases, involving special investigators, social workers and child psychologists.

From June 1, around 100 local and intermediate courts will begin settling family disputes in more effective and humane ways.

Shen Deyong, SPC executive vice president, urged courts piloting the program to select and appoint experienced judges who are familiar with, and passionate about, family trials, as well as improve support for such trials.

The changes are in response to demand and a perceived need to improve the handling of family cases. They reflect the courts' contribution to innovation in social governance, Shen said.

The pilot program covers marriage, child support, the elderly, adoption, cohabitation, and inheritance and division of property.
