Zhao Zuohai was released from prison in May 2010, he served 11 years in prison. He was acquitted because the man he allegedly murdered turned up alive. Following his acquittal, six former police officers were arrested for allegedly torturing Zhao into confessing to a crime that never occurred. Zhao received 650,000 yuan ($102,960) in compensation, but said the money only made him feel isolated from his family members and friends. Worse, due to Zhao's lack of skills, he had difficulty reintegrating into society. In 2014, the local authorities helped him find a job as a cleaner in Shangqiu with a monthly salary of 1,000 yuan.
