BEIJING - China's top leaders will attend a ceremony to mark the country's first Martyrs' Day, which falls on Sept 30.

The leaders, together with representatives from all walks of life, will lay flower baskets at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen Square, downtown Beijing, on Tuesday morning.

China Central Television will live broadcast the event.

China's top legislature last month approved September 30 as Martyrs' Day to commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for national independence and prosperity. The date is one day before China's National Day.
