BEIJING - Liu Yunshan, senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has called on Party members to find their shortcomings and better care for the people.

Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Wednesday before a special meeting to recall the exemplary life of Lan Hui, a late county deputy head.

Lan, former deputy head of Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County in southwest China's Sichuan Province, fell off a cliff and died while inspecting a rural road on May 23 of this year. He was 48.

Lan was known for his paintstaking efforts at the forefront of relief and reconstruction work following the devastating May 12 quake in 2008. He was said to have traveled an average of 200-plus km every day during his three-year tenure as deputy head of the county.

"Comrade Lan Hui always took care of people's matters with all his heart. People said he was like a fire in the winter, warming whenever he went," Liu said.

According to Liu, Lan is a mirror who could reflect other CPC members' deficiencies and let them know in what way to improve themselves. Party members should understand better the essence of serving the people from Lan's stories.

On behalf of President Xi Jinping and the CPC Central Committee, Liu expressed his condolences to Lan's relatives and gave them Lan's posthumous "National Outstanding CPC Member" certificate.

Also on Wednesday, the publicity and organizational departments of the CPC Central Committee and other groups jointly released a circular urging all Party members to learn from Lan Hui.

While urging on Party members and officials to bring themselves closer to the people and pay more attention to their hardships, the circular called on various organizations to guide Party members to learn from Lan's stories and serve the people wholeheartedly.

On Sunday, President Xi Jinping called Lan "a role model for CPC members in the new era," asking CPC members and officials to learn from his loyalty to the Party, diligence and dedication to his job.
