Chinese, French FMs meet over Syria

UNITED NATIONS -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his French counterpart Laurent Fabius Tuesday here at the UN headquarters, as world leaders gathered for the General Debate of the 68th United Nations General Assembly.

The two mainly discussed the issue of Syria.

On Syria's chemical weapons, Wang said all parties should maintain the momentum of seeking a peaceful resolution and it is important for the international community to reach consensus on the issue as soon as possible.

China hopes that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) would implement the process of inspecting and destroying Syria's chemical weapons as soon as possible, said Wang, adding that UN Security Council should offer political support accordingly.

During the meeting, Wang also called for an early convening of the second international conference on Syria in Geneva, to speed up a political settlement of the Syria issue.

Wang said, a good discussions between China and France on Syria is conducive for the UN Security Council to reach an early consensus.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on nuclear issues in Iran and on the Korean Peninsula.
