BEIJING - China on Tuesday reaffirmed its stance of banning weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

"China has always advocated a comprehensive ban on all WMDs and supported the purpose and aim of the Chemical Weapons Convention," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing on Tuesday.

Hong's comments came after U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday said Syrian President Bashar Assad's use of chemical weapons is totally unacceptable.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Syria will never use chemical weapons on its people.

"China opposes the development and use of chemical weapons and maintains the enhanced universality of the Chemical Weapons Convention," Hong said.
