Penarol win Uruguay's Clausura title
MONTEVIDEO - Former Atletico Madrid wingers Cristian Rodriguez and Maxi Rodriguez struck second-half goals as Penarol beat Cerro 4-0 to secure their eighth Uruguayan Clausura title on Sunday.
Argentine forward Lucas Viatri opened the scoring just before halftime at Estadio Luis Troccoli with a long-range effort before Cristian Rodriguez converted from the penalty spot.
Maxi Rodriguez made it 3-0 with a low drive and he then provided the assist for Cristian Rodriguez's second goal: a perfectly placed first-time finish from the edge of the penalty box.
The result meant Penarol clinched the title with one round to spare in the season. Defensor, who lead the overall 2017 Campeonato Uruguayo standings, are second, seven points further back.
Penarol also won the Clausura title in 1994, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2010 and 2015.
