Chongqing mayor Hu Henghua under investigation for suspected corruption

Hu Henghua, mayor of Chongqing, is under investigation for suspected serious violations of Party disciplines and national laws, China's top anti-corruption watchdogs announced on Friday.

The announcement was made online by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision. No further details were released.

Public records show that Hu, 62, a native of Hunan province, began his career in July 1983 and joined the Party in June 1985. After graduating from a college in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, he worked in his home province for more than three decades. During that time, he held several key positions in Hunan, including head of the provincial development and reform commission and mayor of Changsha, the provincial capital.

Between October 2020 and December 2021, Hu served as deputy Party secretary of Shaanxi province. He was appointed deputy Party secretary and acting mayor of Chongqing in December 2021 and became mayor of the city in January 2022.
