Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the significance of China to Australia during a Chinese New Year celebration in Melbourne on Saturday, highlighting the deep ties between the peoples of both nations as a cornerstone of the relationship.

"Australia is fortunate to look north to the fastest growing region of the world in human history, and that represents an incredible opportunity for Australia to seize," Albanese said.

He underscored the Australian government's efforts to stabilize relations with China. "It means that families in Shanghai and Beijing are sitting down to enjoy a meal of Australian beef, perhaps with Australian barley making a contribution as well," he said, adding the stabilization serves the interests of both nations.

"The economic and trade relations between Australia and China are very important, but even more important is the relationship between the peoples of both countries," he said.

Speaking positively about the future of bilateral relations, Albanese reaffirmed his confidence in deepening ties. "The relationship is very strong, and I want it to be even stronger in the future."

Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian said that since 2022, China-Australia relations have been steadily improving, achieving a comprehensive turnaround. The bilateral relationship is mutually beneficial in nature, he said, and friendly cooperation is the mainstream.

Xiao expressed his hope that overseas Chinese will continue to contribute to the friendship between the two countries in the Year of the Snake.

Australian Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said Chinese New Year plays an important bridging role in connecting Australia and China, and that the prospects of Australia-China relations are bright.

"It's a wonderful opportunity ... to celebrate a connection between our two great nations," Dutton said. "But the future, which is the most important element of this relationship, is brighter than it's ever been before."

Both Albanese and Dutton expressed their appreciation of local Chinese communities. Their contributions are something to celebrate every day of the year, Albanese said.

The celebrations in Melbourne were held by the nonprofit Asian Business Association of Whitehorse. The event has been held since 2003 and attracts about 80,000 people each year.
