Medical insurance fund records slight surplus in 2024
China's medical insurance fund achieved a balance between income and expenditures with a slight surplus last year, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the fund, the National Healthcare Security Administration announced on Friday.
Data released by the administration showed that the total revenue of the national basic medical insurance fund in 2024 reached 3.48 trillion yuan ($475 billion), up 4.4 percent year-on-year, according to the administration.
The total expenditure of the fund was 2.97 trillion yuan, an increase of 5.5 percent year-on-year, according to the data.
The country has also seen development in outpatient care and maternity medical insurance in the past year, the administration said.
It revealed that 6.7 billion outpatient visits were settled using basic medical insurance in 2024, up 19 percent year-on-year, while the expenditure of the maternity insurance fund was 143.2 billion yuan, a rise of 33.9 percent compared to 2023.
