MADRID - Liga Santander minnows Leganes produced the shock of the season as they beat FC Barcelona in their Butarque Stadium on Wednesday night, and Real Madrid also crashed to defeat.

Barca went into the game as league leaders, while Leganes were bottom of the table without a win and everything looked to be going according to the script when Phillipe Coutinho scored an excellent goal to put Barca ahead after just 12 minutes.

Everything changed in second half as Leganes hit Barca in the 52nd and 53rd minutes with Nabil el Zhar scoring from a cross to level the scores and Oscar taking advantage of a rebound off Gerard Pique to score the home side's second.

Barca laid siege to the Leganes goal, but the home side held firm with goalkeeper 'Pichu' Cuellar making a magnificent double save to deny Coutinho and Pique.

That result means that a point away to Sevilla would put Real Madrid top of the table, but nothing went right for Julen Lopetegui's side in the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat.

Sevilla opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Andre Silva got on the end of Jesus Navas' ball from the right and the Portuguese striker doubled Sevilla's lead five minutes later.

A Madrid corner fell to Navas on the counter-attack and although Thibaut Courtois saved from the winger, Silva was in the right place to slide the ball into the net.

Wissam Ben Yedder scored Sevilla's third goal after Fran Vazquez's header put him clean though on goal in the 39th minute and Madrid's misery was complete in the second half when left back Marcelo was unable to continue.

Pablo Fornals scored a wonder-goal to put Villarreal ahead away to Athletic Club Bilbao in the 65th minute of what had until then been an even game.

Fornals hit a bouncing ball from around 45 yards from goal to beat Athletic keeper Unai Simon, who was a few steps off his goal line and Villarreal then sealed the win with a header from Funes Mori, which was given after the referee consulted with the VAR and Toto Ekambi, who made it 3-0 in injury time.

Valencia remain without a win after Iago Aspas' 81st minute goal cancelled out Batshuayi's opener for the home side to make it 1-1 between Valencia and Celta Vigo.

On Tuesday Atletico Madrid returned to form with an easy 3-0 win at home to Huesca. Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Partey and Koke had sealed the win by the 33rd minute allowing Atletico to take their foot off the gas to reserve energy ahead of Saturday's derby against Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu.

Espanyol continued their positive start to the campaign as a Mario Hermoso goal gave them a 1-0 win at home to Eibar.

Meanwhile Real Sociedad are still searching for their first win in the refurbished Anoeta Stadium after a 2-2 draw against Rayo Vallecano.

Jon Bautista opened the scoring for 'la Real' but Rayo turned the score around thanks to Luis Advincula and an Oscar Trejo penalty, before Willian Jose's second half header assured a share of the points.
