Commemorative Singapore coins mark Trump-Kim summit

The Singapore Mint unveiled three types of commemorative coins on Tuesday, ahead of the upcoming meeting between United States President Donald Trump and the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Jong-un.

Unveiling the three commemorative coins, which will be colored either gold, silver, or nickel, the Singapore Mint, which is a government company responsible for making the currency of Singapore and keeping it from being counterfeited, said it was excited to document history through minted coins and medallions.

One side of the coin features a handshake between the two leaders, with the respective flags of both countries as a background. The reverse side shows a dove with the slogan "World Peace" emblazoned above.

The summit’s planned date and text "Summit in Singapore" have been minted at the top of the medallion, while the national flowers of the US and the DPRK - the rose and the magnolia - featured on the back.

A total of 1,000 gold medallions – priced at S$1,380 each – were slated to be made available to buyers from Singapore and around the world. The number has since been increased to 3,000, following an "overwhelming response", the Singapore Mint said.

The White House last month unveiled its own commemorative coin for the summit, which will be available for purchase online via the White House gift shop website.

Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet at 9am Singapore time on June 12, the White House said on Monday.
