There is a story about these two paintings. During the 1930s, painters Qi Baishi and Wang Mengbai enjoyed equal fame and were unwilling to call the other superior. Once, someone took a portrait of a lady's back by Wang to Qi and asked Qi to use the portrait as template. Qi tightened the lady's belt on her waist in his painting, while the belt is loosely tied in Wang's painting. Artists then praised Qi's painting style, calling it slightly better than Wang’s.
