Spirit of China, an exhibition of oil paintings currently running in Beijing, highlights the evolution of the abstract style among contemporary painters.

The works on show offer a glimpse into how artists across the country continue to develop the language of oil painting, which was introduced to China more than a century ago, to provide new visual experiences that reflect the Eastern aesthetic.

The display includes 76 works selected from more than 2,550 submissions, as well as commissions from established artists such as Tan Ping from Beijing and Ding Yi from Shanghai.

The exhibition is being held at the Today Art Museum through Dec 29, and will travel to the Shandong Art Museum in Jinan in January.
